I have very high hopes for how well AI can make teaching and learning more effective in the next few years but there are ways that we can start using these new tools now to make learning better. Using an AI chat tool like ChatGPT or Bard, we can start to look at ways to improve the design of a lesson to better meet the diverse needs of our students. From using it as a brainstorming tool to adjusting the resources/design of a lesson, there are ways to use prompts to improve the accessibility of a lesson.
Looking at the resources that we are using in our lessons, we can use these tools to adjust the complexity of the text to better meet the reading ability of our students. We can translate whole sections quickly or even just have the chat tools explain the concept in a different way. We can have the chat tools create whole paragraphs or longer readings that explain a concept using analogies or references to something that more engages the student in the learning. We can have the tool suggest different options for how students can show their learning or even create prompts related to the learning that can get the student started on a project based approach.
The design of a prompt is the most important part because a small change to how we are asking the question or what information we give to the chat tool, can create a better response. Sometimes it is giving as much information as possible but other times you may want to be more vague and then adjust your prompt to find the just right amount detail needed to get a response that gives you the information you need.
The following are some suggested prompts that could get you started but it is very easy to use trial and error to find the prompts that will produce the best results for you and your students.
- Adjust the complexity level of the following text to be a ___ grade reading level.
- Translate the following text from English to _________.
- Pull out the important vocabulary from the following text and write a definition that will help someone whose primary language is not English, to understand the terminology.
- Explain the concept of _________ using a variety of analogies.
- Create a list of projects that a student in ____ grade can do to learn more about ______.
- What are some ways that we can improve the accessibility of the following lesson:
- What are some ways that students will be confused about the concept of __________.
- Instead of just doing a worksheet over the concept of __________, what are some other ways that a ____ grade student can learn more about that concept and then show their understanding?
- What are some open ended questions around the concept of _______ that a high school student can use to start a group discussion?
- What is UDL?
- How can I use the concepts of UDL to improve the following lesson:
- Create a science lab around the concept of _______ for a _________ grade science class.
- What is a more authentic project that students in a ______ grade class can do in order to learn more about __________.
- How can I make the following lesson more engaging and authentic to students in a ____ grade classroom: ________.
The following video will go show how you can use ChatGPT to produce responses that can help improve the design of a lesson. There are also some other tools out there that can be used to make learning more accessible to students and I will be posting more about that soon.
