Google has done some updates to Drive recently and one that I really like is that you can now open your Drive files from in the browser into desktop applications. You can open a photoshop file from your Drive in your browser, edit it, hit save and it will be saved in your Drive automatically. No more downloading files, opening in the program, saving and then reuploading.
The steps are pretty simple;
- Make sure you have the latest Google Drive installed on your computer and you are on the New Drive (most people should automatically be on the New Drive but if you are not yet, you should).
- Install this Chrome extension, https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/application-launcher-for/lmjegmlicamnimmfhcmpkclmigmmcbeh.
- Wait a short bit and refresh your Drive page. It took me a minute or so for it to do this.
- Now you should be able to right-click on the file and under “Open with” you should see the possible programs on your computer. Not all programs may be compatible but most of the common ones will be.
This should make the workflow a lot easier when you are working with files in your Drive that you use in other applications. You should be backing up your files so that you are not relying on them being on one device so this is making it easier for many people to start backing up their files automatically.
